Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
Am I eligible for financial aid in addition to my veteran benefits?
-
Yes. In order to be considered for all types of financial aid, you must complete a
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) by the priority deadline of March
2nd of each year that you wish to receive aid. Filing after the March 2nd deadline
will make you ineligible for certain need-based aid. The FAFSA can be found at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. You must also
obtain a PIN number from the Department of Education at
www.pin.ed.gov to sign your
electronic application.
Do I have to report my veteran benefits on my FAFSA?
-
Yes. You must report the number of months and type of veteran’s chapter benefits
you will be receiving during the school year.
Do I have to report my veteran benefits as income on my FAFSA?
-
No. Veteran education benefits are treated as a resource, not as income, and
therefore are not reported as income on the FAFSA. Note that wages earned
through the Veterans Affairs Student Work-Study Allowance Program are not
considered a resource and should be reported as untaxed income on the FAFSA.
How will my veteran’s benefits affect my financial aid award package?
-
The total of all financial aid and veteran benefits, with the exception of
Chapter 30 benefits (GI Bill), must not exceed the cost of attendance.
Adjustments will be made to the award package if an over-award occurs.
Can I get the California Veterans Tuition Waiver and the Cal Grant at the same
time?
-
No. The Cal Vet Tuition Waiver and the Cal Grant are both considered fee-paying
resources and therefore, students are only eligible to receive one during a period
of enrollment. The Cal Grant will take precedence and automatically credit to the
BARC account to cover UC registration fees. The Cal Vet Tuition Waiver can be
applied to a summer program, as the Cal Grant is not automatically awarded during
summer session.
Who should I notify when my veterans benefits expire?
-
Contact veteran representatives in the Office of the Registrar and the Financial
Aid Office. They will need to update your benefit information and adjust your
financial aid award package.
What happens to my financial aid if I am called to active duty?
-
You will not lose financial aid eligibility if you take a leave of absence from
school. Future aid will not be disbursed and therefore, you will not be responsible
for paying back any funds. Please notify our office when you return so that we
can prepare an award package that reflects your current status.
Can I defer my direct loan repayment if I am called to active duty?
