Work-Study Student Guide

Stand And Deliver

As A UCSB Employee
Seek Assistance


As A UCSB Employee, You Are Expected To Act Appropriately
  • Report to work promptly when scheduled; and

  • Notify your supervisor as soon as possible when you will be late or unable to work due to conflicts between your studies and work schedule; and

  • Refrain from studying or conducting personal business on the job; and

  • Report your hours worked accurately; and

  • Perform work satisfactorily or better; and

  • Consider your employer's needs as well as your own when requesting time off; and

  • Dress appropriately for your work location; and

  • Submit your time sheet on time a late time sheet means a late paycheck.

You Are Responsible For Your Actions
  • You are subject to disciplinary action for unsatisfactory performance, poor attendance, or misconduct.

  • Major offenses, such as insubordination, harassment, assault, theft, or falsification of hours worked are grounds for immediate discharge.

  • If your employer instructs you to falsify your time sheet:

    • Do not do as you were told; and

    • Immediately report the incident to the Financial Aid Office.

    • Sample Statements:

      "Because you're on Work-Study, you can double your hours," or "Don't worry about the money I owe you for those supplies, just write down some extra Work-Study hours."

      Caution:

      Falsification of Work-Study hours is cause for immediate cancellation of your financial aid. It also leaves you subject to a $10,000.00 fine and/or a one-year prison sentence.
Violations will be reported to the UCSB Office of Judicial Affairs where sanctions range from disciplinary probation to dismissal from the University.


Seek Assistance

If you have an unresolvable or extraordinary problem with your employer, please discuss the problem with a Financial Aid staff member. Be sure to review the Legal Protections sections on the "New Employee Information for Work-Study Students."

Track Your Award As You Earn It
  • As soon as you are hired, divide your hourly rate into your award to calculate your "allowable" Work-Study hours;

  • Deduct your "earned" hours with the close of each payroll cycle; and

  • Alert your employer as your remaining (allowable) hours run low.

Remember Your Resume

Keep a copy of your job description and a record of your employment dates, your supervisor's name, phone and address for reference when completing your resume.
