About

Sekani’s research examines how Black women experience racialized exclusion, discrimination, and marginalization within a historically white elite creative industry such as ballet. Through her research, she is addressing the monolithic ideologies that are continuously placed on Black dancers by deconstructing the various ways in which Black bodies are identified and viewed and how Black people attain economic and cultural capital even though others in the ballet industry assume that they lack access to these forms of capital and embodiment.
