IRS Data Retrieval Tool Outage

FAFSA’s IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRSDRT) is currently unavailable. IRSDRT will become available again at the start of the 2018-2019 FAFSA season that will begin in October 2017.

This outage occurred after California’s March 2nd priority deadline for the 2017-2018 FAFSA. You still have time to file the 2017-2018 FAFSA if you missed the priority deadline. Instead of using the Data Retrieval Tool, you can manually input your 2015 tax information from your federal tax return. Remember, 2015 tax information is being used on the 2017-2018 FAFSA due to the prior-prior year FAFSA changes.

Q: Why is the IRSDRT unavailable?
A: To protect sensitive tax payer data.
Please see the Federal Student Aid Announcement for more information.

Q: I already used the IRSDRT. How will this impact me?
A: This outage will not impact you.
Please do not adjust any information transferred to your FAFSA by the IRS.

Q: I did not use the IRSDRT. How will this impact me?
A: You will need to fill out your 2017-2018 FAFSA using information from your 2015 IRS 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ.
The FAFSA provides line-by-line instructions based on your tax return type. If selected for verification, your campus will request a tax return transcript.

Q: How do I request a tax return transcript?
A: Transcripts can be requested online, over the phone, through fax, or through mail. Full instructions can be found here.

Q: How long does it take to receive the tax return transcript?
A: Tax filers who create an account with the IRS can receive their transcript immediately by PDF.
Tax filers who request by mail will receive their transcript within 5-10 calendar days. Most tax filers can request a transcript within 2-3 weeks of filing online or 4-6 weeks of filing by mail.

Q: What tax year information do I use on the 2017-2018 FAFSA?
A: 2015. The 2016 tax year will be used on the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
